The work of the 3 pschology disciplines

Clinical Psychologists - play an important role in assessing people and referring them where necessary for psychiatric interventions. They work in the hospital with patinets and families.

Counselling Psychology provide support in hospitals and communities, helping individuals and families navigate challenges.

Community Psychologists provide grassroots support making interventions accessible to all.

What You’ll Be Doing As a psychology intern

You’ll be actively contributing to the work of the psychologists and supporting them. Opportunities could include:

• Participate in the running of well-being clubs in schools, promoting mental health awareness among students.

• Conduct home visits, support individuals with mental health issues and their families, ensuring they receive continued care after hospital discharge. (In Uganda, psychiatric patients whose needs cannot be managed and supported effectively in the community are supported in hopsitals)

• Assist in counselling sessions for individuals and groups, providing crucial support.

• Engage in peer-support groups for psychiatric patients, fostering resilience and recovery.

• Help run self-help groups and community outreach programs, empowering people with knowledge and access to mental health resources.

• Work with suicide survivors and their families, creating safe spaces for discussion and healing.

• Support psycho-social training programs that equip local professionals and communities with essential mental health skills. During your placement, you will work alongside these professionals in hospitals and community settings, gaining firsthand experience of both the challenges and solutions in Uganda’s mental health landscape.
